A.R. Valentien, a prominent artist of the American Arts and Crafts movement, was commissioned by Ellen Browning Scripps in San Diego in the early 1900s to create intricately detailed, botanically accurate watercolor paintings of all native California plants. This work took 10 years to complete and required Valentien to travel from the Mexican border to Oregon, as he collected fresh specimens to paint. His works remained stored away for years until 1999 when, through the generosity of Eleanor and Jerry Navarra, the Museum was able to photograph the collection and take additional steps to conserve the beautiful paintings.
